Silicon Mold Making

Soft molds, made from Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) Silicone Rubber are used to obtain the wax pattern of any physical model, either made from machining or rapid prototyping. As the process is carried out under vacuum, it is easy to form complex shapes without air bubbles.  The main advantage of RTV molds is that it allows for small undercuts in the pattern since it is rubbery.
RTV Silicon Rubber is particularly well suited for molds requiring high dimensional accuracy. Molds can withstand temperatures up to 180ºC. Depending on the complexity and required surface finish, it is possible to cast 30 to 60 wax patterns per mold, and for simple geometries, one mold can be used to produce up to 100 wax patterns. The surface finish of the final wax pattern is excellent and is useable for investment casting.
Examples of Silicon Molds,
In addition to rapid prototyping, RTV molding allows for multiple prototypes with enhanced material properties while saving time and money.  If durable prototypes are required in larger quantities early in the design cycle, a commitment to hard tooling may not be practical because of the likelihood of design changes or short deadlines. RTV economically bridges the gap between RP and hard tooling, providing prototypes in one or two weeks at a fraction of the cost.  The lower cost and time required per unit, combined with the provision of superior material properties, make RTV a fast, economical solution for early error detection and increased customer satisfaction.
